“The Other”
The light circle in all images evokes a searchlight- an allegorical homage to a potential “border crossing.” The series crescendoes into a final image depicting a transformation; conformation into a culture that I’ve always half belonged to yet never fully accepted. The attempt is to display my existence between two worlds- “clean up your heritage to acquiesce.” Additionally, with the utilisation of the black and white Puerto Rican flag- which symbolises resistance- “The Other” invites the viewer to question the very unique colonial dynamic between Puerto Rico and the United States. Not a state, unable to vote for the president or senate that rules over them; Puerto Rican citizens are clearly second class ones. Stereotypes and willful ignorance from “first class citizens” aggravate the exchange tenfold.

“Just how these photographs disguise the figure in the photo, while simultaneously giving light to what the figure represents, is just how we have to see the complexity of human identity.”

“Luna appears to be swimming inside a bathtub in one of the prints. It suggests the eternal search every artist faces to get to know themselves and the restless search for their place in this world both as artists, yet more importantly, as people.”
-Camile Roldán Soto, Journalist for El Nuevo Día, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
